Albert Montgomery Dupuy McCormick

(1866-1932)

Named for his father’s best friend at Princeton, Albert lost his father near his 4th birthday. He grew up in Clermont in the aftermath of the Civil War, then graduated from medical school at the U. of Maryland and from the U.S. Naval Academy. An 1889 group photograph with Assistant Surgeon Albert M.D. McCormick and the officers of the new cruiser USS Chicago show the young doctor and his companions on the cusp of the birth of the modern steel navy and the rise of the U.S. as a world power. He distinguished himself at the Battle of Guantanamo Bay in the Spanish-American War, replacing the Marine battalion surgeon on shore killed in action. He became a Rear Admiral during WWI and was a leader of the Navy’s health services until his retirement in 1930. When his mother, Ellen McCormick, died in 1908, he bought out his two siblings’ interests and began the modernization of the farm and repairs to the historic buildings. He built the 1917 bank barn and the two existing tenant houses.
