Layers of Time: The Architectural Legacy of Clermont Farm
The owner's house at Clermont stands as one of Virginia’s most significant and best-preserved examples of mid-18th-century architecture from west of the Blue Ridge, and one of the most thoroughly documented. It is the oldest house in Clarke County. Originally built in 1756 as a frontier home, the main house evolved over the centuries in response to the lives and needs of the three owner families who succeeded the original grantee, John Vance, who may have had a cabin on the site. Today, the property’s many historic buildings reflect layers of architectural and technological change, each carefully preserved, offering insight into Virginia’s rural past and the personal histories shaped within their walls.
